Alcoholism's definition, according to Merriam-Webster is: continued excessive or compulsive use of alcoholic drinks; a chronic, a progressive, potentially fatal disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction.


Also, the American Medical Association states "Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive treatable disease in which a person has lost control over her or his drinking so that it is interfering with some vital areas of her or his life such as family, friends or job, school or health."

My ex husband Joe, experienced alcoholism during most of his adult life. I could no longer enable Joe's addiction . I had to make a very difficult life choice that forever changed my life.
